Review of We Were Soldiers (2002) by Dfg D — 04 Nov 2009
So terrible, so utterly, utterly awful.
I was uncertain if it was comedy until the burned man in the helicopter said "Tell my wife I love her!" It was at that point I became acutely aware of two things. One, that this 75 million dollar picture couldn't afford CGI. Two, it wasn't merely melodramatic, it was also a very dark parody.
To enforce the point, Barry Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band mocks what seem to be actual photos from the battle.
How much did Kokoda cost?
Elliot and Russell are the only well cast actors. To fully achieve the level of irony that Wallace craved; Klein, Pepper, Kinnear and Gibson were called in apparently. This is probably the movie that really made Gibson start directing. At least he got to be Catholic in it though!
-Too long.
-Laughable music choices.
+Camp.
Bottom Line:
Worth watching once for fans.
