Review of We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) by Mike F — 20 Jan 2015
How do you handle a topic like this? This movie answers that question. No simple answers, no sensationalism, just a set of powerful performances in a movie that is very gripping. It's not linear and I know some people might give up about a 3rd of the way through. But, it is so much like real life, it's worth sticking with. The big questions are not answered, again, like real life.
Some of the early moments when Eva is at the end of her rope reminded me of my own worst moments with my kids early on. And maybe that's what I liked about the movie. I don't know how many times I said to myself "this is every parent's worst nightmare" - and that was well BEFORE Kevin actually did anything destructive. That feeling that you are about to explode from frustration was captured so well. Maybe not all parents ever get to that point, but for me, that level of honest writing about the challenges of parenthood was as important - and maybe more important - than the climax of the film.
