Review of We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) by Joe A — 10 Jul 2012
Dull, unpleasant and far too arty for it's own good, Director Lynne Ramsey seems to be more interested in showing you what she learned in film school then telling a cohesive story. Any drama or intensity this story about a reluctant mother (Tilda Swinton wearing a WTF face for two hours) and her bad seed offspring (Ezra Miller being effectively evil) is lost amidst the distracting fractured narrative and all the artsy hocus pocus.
What we have left is two grueling hours of unpleasantness to sit through as Kevin grows from evil kid to murderous teen and his mother basically sits by and watches the monster form before her eyes. And once the film is finally done, the only emotional responses we have are relief and wonder.
.. as in wonder what the point of it all was. Also stars John C. Reilly as Kevin's oblivious dad.
