Review of We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) by Jeanette R — 19 Jul 2012
I don't know if it was good or bad to watch this on the same day as the shooting tragedy in Aurora, CO unfolded but I was a little bit blown away by what I saw here. Tilda Swinton's performance as a mother who never really connects with her troubled son is heart-wrenching and simply the best work I've seen her do yet.
This is the ultimate worst case scenario for a parent and their wasn't a second of this movie where my heart didn't go out to her even though we don't even know the full extent until the very end. Lynne Ramsay's use of the color red throughout the film is the perfect depiction of a woman who is literally left with blood on her hands through no fault of her own. It's a painful watch but definitely worth the journey.
