Review of We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) by Kate H — 27 Sep 2012
Much more artsy than I anticipated but still quite good. Very harrowing, very unsettling, story of a mother whose son commits multiple murders. She is reviled by her community and is flashing back and forth between her life now and her life with her family. Tilda Swinton gets most of the credit for this film but we have to give massive props to the utterly creepy Ezra Miller as Kevin along with all the other child actors who play him. It's a study of nature vs. nurture and we never do sort out if Mom could have done more or if Kevin is just demon spawn, which is perfect for this movie.
I'm much more curious to read the book now since I feel like some things were omitted or cut - I would like to see exactly why the mother gets all the crap and the son not so much - but it still was an effective film.
