Review of We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) by Diego K — 13 Apr 2013
I guess it's common to say by now, but Tilda Swinton gives a great performance in this film even when it starts to become a little too ridiculous to believe at times. At first I enjoyed the non linear time and just the slow growth of Kevin where we start to see some clues as to how we get to the present, but soon he just comes off as a brat a la Problem Child with John Ritter.
The film then becomes a psychological thriller it loses all subtlety and most of its heart. We feel the mother's pain in the present and we see her frustration in the past, but it's odd to just see him torment his mother by doing obviously sick things and showcasing textbook serial killer signs.
More than a few times I had to laugh or roll my eyes at some of the film's more extreme moments.
