Review of We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) by Irvin C — 30 Apr 2013
Ramsey's attempt to capture Eva's (Swinton) stream of consciousness by working backwards in this film starts off artistically and then loses steam. Characterizations are disappointingly one dimensional and the nature vs.
nurture argument is inadequately developed. The movie in the end is 'safe' and directed as a sloppy, inexperienced artistic experiment. Visual metaphors like the use of the colour red and paralleled mother/son idiosyncrasies lack subtlety and are repetitive.
Swinton's superb acting is the strongest contribution to an otherwise disappointing film.
