Review of We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) by Matt S — 16 Dec 2014
This was a very interesting premise for a film that was executed horribly. Essentially, the film follows around a woman whose terrible son she never really loved and who committed some atrocity that destroys her life.
The film is told mostly a series of melancholy memories, visuals and music. When I say it was horribly executed, it wasn't because Tilda Swinton's performance wasn't phenomenal or that the film wasn't well shot.
It's because the writing was so poor. Any amount of tenseness or thrills the film could have built to toward the end was completely negated by the fact that we know he did something horrible. Also, the actions of the characters in the film don't make hardly any sense, and her son is a complete monster for no reason whatsoever.
It's hard to watch, and because you know up front that something horrible is going to happen in the film's finale, you just really want it to end. It did end. And I wished I could get those two hours of my life back.
