Review of We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) by Korry S — 07 Feb 2016
Two days later, I'm still thinking about this movie. It's sort of a modern take on The Bad Seed (1956), which isn't a bad thing at all. Lynne Ramsay shot & scripted this in such an artistic, beautiful way that it makes the content that much more unsettling.
And as one would expect, Tilda Swinton give quite an amazing performance as the distraught mother. "Kevin" is split between Jasper Newell & Ezra Miller to showcase him at different ages, and both deliver such cold, psychologically unsettling performances that you can't resist the occasional shiver.
The other characters are really tertiary, even John C. Reilly as the father who just doesn't understand what's wrong since he seems to have a perfect relationship with Kevin. Don't get me wrong; that doesn't mean that the performances from him, Alex Manette & Ashley Gerasimovich aren't stellar.
This just happens to be a story about a mother & her sonâ?¦her cold, soulless, psychopath of a son.
