Review of We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) by Anthony K — 07 Feb 2016
This movie could rip you apart. It's a terrifying case study of a flawed mother and her psychopathic son. Beautifully shot, perfectly acted..and a few years after its made, it hits closer to home than ever. A must watch.
Edit: Upon rewatch, this is an even more perfect film. I've seen criticisms levied against it that suggest Tilda Swinton's mother character is wholly responsible for Kevin's rage; that is absurd. Plenty of people grow up with less-than-nurturing mothers, and don't go on to murder their classmates.
Kevin was born with a taste for sadism; a taste he developed while torturing the only victim he had access to for his formative years - his mother. And yet ultimately, like many mentally infantile, emotionally regressive psychopaths, Kevin's sexual attraction to his mother confuses him - violently.
