Review of We Bought a Zoo (2011) by Graham S — 21 Nov 2012
A predictable ride, but with Cameron Crowe at the wheel, the heartstrings are pulled all the way and you end up at your destination satisfied. Crowe turns the famous W.C. Fields line on its head and works charmingly with both animal and child.
The zoo is of course merely a backdrop for the nostalgic and melancholic ride through familiar heartbreak and heartache, but it works. Damon is endearing, and shows a bit more emotion than I've seen before.
Maggie Elizabeth Jones steals many a scene easily, and Scarlett Johansson as a zookeeper.. in one word, hot. Many reviewers dislike the perceived cheese factor and over the top emotional swells. Personally, I say phooey on them.
The world needs more of these reminders that love can be cheesy, schmaltzy and over the top. Open your hearts; We Bought A Zoo is lovely. Don't keep it in a cage.
