Review of We Bought a Zoo (2011) by Bob S — 29 Jan 2013
I had low expectations, but couldn't have been more wrong about the story of a family so desperate for change that they leave the city to buy a rural zoo. Many of these types of characters have been depicted in countless prior films, but the uniqueness of this story added original elements I hadn't expected.
Crowe has always done a terrific job of addressing the tiniest details in his characters and the film's protagonist, Benjamin (played by Damon), is no different. Damon's portrayal of a grieving widower with life spinning out-of-control felt quite authentic.
The film can be sad at times, but triumph during times of despair leaves you with an uplifting feeling. Also, the supporting cast boosts the film with subtle and effective comedy relief from Church and Higgins and Johansson's intoxicating charisma.
