Review of We Are Your Friends (2015) by Todd F — 30 Nov 2015
The film centers on four longtime friends who are marshaling their resources in an attempt to break free of the dreaded San Fernando Valley. Soon you feel the film's biggest problem: you never care about this dynamic, which is a significant issue considering the title. As the film continues, it continues to drag things down. Worst of all is the unnecessary sub plot where the guys get jobs working for a sleazy foreclosure scam artist.
Nevertheless, this movie is worth your time. At one point, Max Joseph has Cole demonstrate to the viewer how he captivates a crowd by making sure the bpm of the music become increasingly synced to the heartbeats of his audience. This scene demonstrates that Max Joseph has a clear vision of how he wants to captivate the viewer into understanding the intoxication of good dance music. Visually, the film is very appealing. What's also interesting is how it keenly observes a character who doesn't know how to secure his future, or his identity.
It surely fails at some point because it had all the potential at becoming something bigger, but it's still very enjoyable. It's the kind of film that lives at the moment.
