Review of We Are What We Are (2013) by Sonia S — 25 Sep 2013
I am shocked that critics loved this film, you must be kidding me! I went to see it at Arclight Cinemas at the Sunset Strip. Written and directed by Jim Mickle, this is the story of a family of cannibals living in rural America.
The Parkers (Frank, Iris, Rose and Rory) have always kept to themselves. Behind closed doors, patriarch Frank rules his family with a rigorous fervor, determined to keep his ancestral customs intact at any cost.
As a torrential rainstorm moves into the area, tragedy strikes and his daughters Iris and Rose are forced to assume responsibilities that extend beyond those of a typical family. Let's face it, this family eats human flesh, they kidnap people and cook them.
Thankfully, not much is shown of this grotesque secret, albeit a few shocking scenes of naked female corpses hanging with missing chunks of fless and the ending which was gross, sad and depressing. Folks this is a slow moving film, the first 40 minutes slow, the characters lead empty, sad lives and it is so depressing.
I cannot in good conscience recommend this film despite the "glowing" critics recommendations. I truly wonder about possible hidden agendas behind the critics reviews!! This is NOT "one of the best horror films in America" oh my God what a fallacy! NOT RECOMMENDED.
