Review of We Are What We Are (2013) by Abe F — 10 Apr 2014
Horror's a tricky one to pull off without devolving into cheap thrills and constant jump-scare territory. Mood, tone and pace all have to sit just right in order to establish a nice undercurrent of dread. Restraint is the key word here, and We Are What We Are knows exactly that. Although not completely unpredictable, this film takes its time, ambling along building mystery and intrigue; and even when the sheet does come down, there's still a hell of a lot there to both enjoy and be repulsed by.
Tight, efficient no-nonsense film making and easily one of the best horror films of the past couple of years.
