Review of We Are What We Are (2010) by Javier V — 11 May 2011
A rarely-touched concept in mainstream cinema and even rarely do we see it being analysed at such length and with such depth, this movie may not appeal to your average Joe, helped by its slowly unfolding premise.
However, to patient moviegoers who don't mind sitting through a gory, albeit controlled, and a novel idea, the movie may have a pay off. That reward comes in the form of brilliant and extremely mature performances, and stable direction, coupled with neatly insinuated screeches of violin as background score to underline the morbidness on the screen.
The movie may seem to fall on the lines of "Let the right one in" (and there can never be any comparison between the two, as the latter is purely incomparable), but giving the movie a more family-oriented aspect, in its own twisted fashion, it does stand on it's own, and that definitely is a good thing.
