Review of We Are the Strange (2007) by James T — 05 Feb 2008
Viewed 2/4. An anime girl and a Kewpie doll do battle against a hostile universe of evil monsters and robots. It's a narrative that could have been written with a collection of action figures, but the film's visual embodiment of this narrative is astonishingly striking and fresh.
Director M dot Strange borrows from the aesthetics of stop-motion, anime, 8-bit video games, and 3-D modeling software, and melds it all into something that has a weird coherence. It doesn't look like any other film out there-- and when was the last time you said that?
