Review of We Are the Night (2010) by Melanie K — 14 May 2011
After a very long time, there finally is a vampire movie made in Germany again...and much to my pleasure, it has absolutely nothing to do with the currently oh-so-popular sparkling vamp softies. "We are the night" is a modern, stylish, hip and sexy movie that has it all: action, fun, drama, blood and romance. It is somewhere between "True Blood" and "Interview with a vampire" with a good amount of "Sex and The City" in it. And this is what the movie is about:
"One night, 18-year-old criminal Lena is bitten by Louise, leader of a female vampire trio that are as deadly as they are beautiful. Her newfound vampiric lifestyle is a blessing and a curse at the same time. At first, she enjoys the limitless freedom, the luxury, the parties. But soon the murderous blood lust of her comrades in arms proves too much for her, and she falls dangerously in love with Tom, a young undercover cop. When she resolves to turn her back on the bloodsucking band of sisters, Louise fury knows no bounds. Lena will have to choose between immortal love and immortal life?#034;.
The film is set in Berlin and shows a lot of different sites of the German capital and its vibrant nightlife. "We are the night" is based on Wolfgang Hohlbein's novel with the same title and definitely does it justice. The only things I missed in the movie was more character developement (especially for Nora and Charlotte) and more time for the ending, which appears a bit rushed. It does, however, indicate the possibility of a sequel (as do the alternative endings provided on the DVD). The soundtrack is awesome and includessome great clubsounds, e. g. by VAST or IAMX. Lean back...and enjoy some 'Vamps in the City'! v--v.
