Review of We Are the Night (2010) by Roxanne R — 24 Dec 2011
I have to agree with critic Mark Holcomb of the Village Voice when he stated: "Gansel compensates for the story's lack of emotional heft with rousing chase scenes and impressive, near-poetic CGI set pieces, and works in a sly suggestion that vampirism is the ultimate expression of consumerist indulgence.
" Right on the money. The reason I am awarding it only three stars is because I disliked the ending so much and the story lacks in seduction and love-making. The film is about a trio of female vampires who live in Berlin.
They party all night and of course sleep all day. The trio headed by Louise, own a club and there Louise meets a human that she is attracted to. Boy did she choose the wrong woman to fall in love with; let's face it, Lena was a loser and a pickpocket but the script called for her to be Louise's object of desire so Louise attacks.
Then Lena becomes a creature of the night but we have a situation here because Lena is straight, not attracted to Louise at all, instead she craves the affections of Tom (Max Riemelt) who is a policeman.
Despite nights of hard partying, excessive shopping, exotic cars, etc, Louise is unable to make Lena fall in love with her so we see a train wreck about to take place! BTW the beginning of the film is awesome.
The only character I disliked in this movie was Lena. Its available in Netflix instant streaming so enjoy!
