Review of We Are Marshall (2006) by Fabiola V — 25 May 2011
We Are Marshall is about the 1970 Marshall football team that picked up what they had left and continued to play the game they loved after a horrific accident. It's not the best sports movie but I really don't think that's what they were going for. I think the game of football is secondary to the film makers trying to explain all of the emotion and heartache these people went through.
I consider myself a McConaughey fan and he did a really good job in this movie. I was real confused with him only talking out of one side of his mouth. I don't know, but I found it really awkward. Who knows, maybe the real coach Lengyel talked like that and McConaughey was just trying to make it as real as possible.
Anyways, Marshall was high on emotion but I just couldn't stop comparing to to Remember the Titans and this one falls just short of the Titans. It's a tearjerker first and a sports movie second. But it's definitely something to take your time and watch.
