Review of We Are Marshall (2006) by Martin ? — 24 May 2009
I've come to the conclusion that to truly appreciate the depth, significance, and overall quality of this movie, you have to have been associated in some manner (either directly or even indirectly) to the Marshall University and Huntington communities to be able to appreciate the film.
Too many people are busy basing this film on the performances of the actors, the small historical inaccuracies, and whatnot and not focusing on the story itself and the meaning behind it. People need to take the film for what it is, and what it is meant to be, and not base it on their preconceptions of what they expected, because that just leads to inevitable disappointment.
I'll agree, I think that perhaps the casting was probably far from perfect (they certainly could've tried to get some at least semi-household names in the supporting roles), but as far as the telling of the story itself, and showing the significance and impact of it on the community, this film deserved an award.
