Review of We Are Marshall (2006) by Bob W — 02 Aug 2010

This is a respectfully told inspiring true story (unlike so many purporting to be based on true stories but are anything but). Contrary to what many reviewers say, it does not finish with a typical feel good ending.

I appreciated the narrated honesty at the end (no team lost more games than Marshall in the 70's, coaches quit, president fired, etc.) Aside from some very minor changes to some facts in order to tell the story better, this is a case where fact is greater than fiction.

This is now one of my favorite sports movies, a genre fraught with predictable plots, because I appreciated how it handles grief, and I read how careful they were to make sure the town of Huntington saw this before it was released.

The only reason I don't give this a higher rating is that McConaughey looks like he is giving a bad impression throughout the movie and it gets downright distracting at times.
