Review of Wayne's World (1992) by Bill P — 08 Jan 2012
To quote the titular character, the big-screen debut of the lovable headbangers from SNL borders on being - wait for it - "excellent". This a extremely odd, but extremely sincere effort from Myers, whose later forays into the "Austin Powers" vehicle lost of the freshness displayed here.
Wayne (Myers) is a slacker who hangs out in a suburb of Illinois and hosts a TV show called "Wayne's World" in his basement with his equally affable pal Garth (the great Dana Carvey). He is approached by a sleazy network exec Benjamin (Rob Lowe) to make a big-budget version of the show and proceeds to try and make it big, all while pursuing the affections of the sexy Cassandra (Tia Carrere).
Essentially, as is usually the case with comedy, it all boils down to: "Is it funny". In this case, the lowbrow, hit-or-miss style that Myers seems to write with plays to enough big laughs here to merit a recommendation (the small sequence where takeout food is ordered in Benjamin's apartment is hilarious).
Party on indeed!
