Review of Wayne's World (1992) by Amelia H — 08 May 2013
Wayne's World is the definition of the 1990's. You aren't a real fan of the decade if you haven't experienced this film. Not only is it a classic, but it's also one of the great comedies of all time.
Based on the popular SNL sketch, this films follows Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey), two over-the-top metal-heads who broadcast a public access television show from Wayne's basement. When a network executive (Rob Lowe) notices the show, he aims to produce a big-budget version of "Wayne's World" and gets the two to sign contracts. Meanwhile, he is also trying to swoon Wayne's girlfriend Cassandra (Tia Carrerre). When Wayne and Garth realize they don't like the way things are being handled, they do everything in their power to save their show.
If you were a fan of the original sketch, then there is no reason you won't love this movie. But even people who know nothing about Wayne's World can enjoy this as an original film. Mike Myers and Dana Carvey are terrific as these iconic characters, providing laughs from beginning to end. I love the constant pop-culture references, which includes nods to everything from Star Trek to Terminator. Rob Lowe is also great as the sleazy network executive, managing to be both funny and mean-spirited all in one.
Wayne's World still holds up as one of the funniest films I have ever seen. It's something that you can just sit back and enjoy, giving you a mixture of comedy and nostalgia. It's pure genius! 5 stars.
