Review of Wayne's World (1992) by Ryan H — 17 Jul 2014
Most of the time, SNL spin-off movies are pretty mediocre, but there's just something about Wayne's World that is still funny 20+ years after its release.
Is it the one-liners? (Thanks... I like to play...) The silliness? (SHWING!) The tunes? (The Bohemian Rhapsody scene is music movie legend.) It's probably a combination of all of these.
Mike Myers' feature film debut is debatably his best, although I'm sure there are plenty of fans of Austin Powers. I personally prefer "shyeah right" to "groovy baby.".
Dana Carvey as the quiet Garth will steal your heart. Gosh dang. ("Foxy!").
The only thing I'm not crazy about is Rob Lowe playing the same part he always played in 90's comedies- the handsome bad guy. It's just too easy. And he's not really all that funny.
Props to Tia Carrere for actually performing all of her songs, though. That's seriously impressive. And Dana Carvey's 100% legit drum solo. Who knew?
An essential 90's comedy AND music movie.
Party on, Wayne.
