Review of Wayne's World (1992) by Anthony K — 17 Sep 2014
I don't know how I got as far as I did without seeing this movie. A while ago, I sat through about half of the sequel before giving up on it and writing off the original as another piece of SNL spinoff garbage. My friends coaxed me time and time again to give it a chance, but the goofy grins of Mike Myers and Dana Carvey on the cover kept me at bay.
Well, I'm glad I finally gave it a chance. While not a comedy masterpiece, Wayne's World is good natured and surprisingly clever in doses with a cast of winning characters. It relies heavily on lampooning (paying homage to?) 80s glam rock though, which had me rolling my eyes for long stretches of the film. If that's your scene, there's little to dislike here. A few of the gags also fall a bit flat, but that's part of Wayne and Garth's appeal. They lumber merrily through life, smiling and hurling jokes nonstop, whether or not they're funny. Even when the world beats down on them, it's all good. Party on, Wayne.
