Review of Wayne's World (1992) by Spangle — 10 Oct 2014
Wayne's World is nowhere near as funny as it thinks it is and is a classic example of why expanding a short skit into a full length movie is bad idea. Mike Myers is great in the lead role and the writing is also very strong, as are, admittedly, very many catch phrases that have had a life beyond the movie and that really speaks to the writing here.
The story is also interesting to some degree, but is entirely cliche, unlikely, and done before. The acting beyond Myers is also poor, especially Dana Carvey. I think his mannerisms here were supposed to be funny, but.
..they just never were. As a whole, it seems like they took a skit from SNL and made it into a movie (which they did do) without adding any additional funny jokes (there were plenty of other jokes but they just were not even close to being funny).
This one is not dreadful because it does hold your interest and, as I said, Myers is very good here, however, I do wish it was funnier and lived up to the hype.
