Review of Waxwork (1988) by Daphnie H — 26 Mar 2006
Where B-movie crosses over to the genuinely viewable. .
Waxwork doesn?t take itself too seriously and neither should we. This classic 80?s go at a wax museum gone wrong has humorous overtones and some engaging special effects for the time..
Zach Galligan (Gremlins) takes on an evil mastermind who has been collecting waxworks made from guests who venture beyond the ropes of the museum. An ancient spell transports the unwary victims to different dimensions as they battle the classic monsters of old..
Werewolves, vampires and zombies abound as Zach reluctantly saves the world with a smirk. Effects are handled by Bob Keen of Alien and Hellraiser fame and they serve to heighten the suspense of a movie full of tongue and cheek humor. You have to love a movie that features the Marquis De Sade as an antagonist..
The movie culminates into a cacophony of good vs. evil as the museum goes up in flames. What waxwork DOESN?T end up in flames? Oh well, there?s a sequel that banks on the first movie?s success but can?t keep with this classic..
Up there with Fright Night for 80?s comedy/horror. .
