Review of Waterworld (1995) by Nikolaj Z — 12 May 2009
The Road Warrior on Jet Skis; with less build-up. (Doesn't take itself too seriously.).
"He's not a freak, and he can take you at any time! He's killed dozens of people, he doesn't have any mercy or anything; he even kills little girls! Gettin' nervous aren't you? He doesn't have a name, so Death can't find him. He doesn't have a home, or people to care for. He's not afraid of anything, men least of all. He's fast and strong, like a big wind. He can hear a hundred miles and see a hundred miles underwater. He can hide in the shadow of a noon sun; he could be behind you and won't even know it until your dead!".
The Mariner's cool, anti-hero (resembling Snake Plisken) works just fine for me in an escapist fantasy/action picture using its production value as a flimsy excuse for all its retardedly awesome stunts/action sequences involving zip lines, bungee cords, and evil, smoking, machine gun wielding pirates riding jet skis (climaxed by James Newton Howards epic score); Jack Black (as The Pilot) and Dennis Hopper (as the Pirate Captain with too many one-liners) only adds to the tongue-in-cheek nature of this film. (The premise really doesn't matter.).
"I don't give a shit what he'd think, he took out my eye! And if I ever see him again, I'm gonna cut open his head and I'm gonna eat his brain! You think he'd like that?".
Also, the set design and costumes are amazing (I want the Mariner's boat); they remind me a lot of "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" with Kevin Sorbo. They have that "just enough to get by" look that makes film both fun and surreal.
"You can't kill him, he's even meaner than you are.".
