Review of Waterworld (1995) by Kyle E — 16 Nov 2009
One of the bigger movies of the 90's that I never got around to watching, "Waterworld" is pretty much preposterous garbage. Think Mad Max in a world filled with WATER! Yes, it's that bad.
In fact, the most preposterous part of this movie was the fact that it took me an hour to figure out the reason the bad guys were called "Smokers" is because they smoked, literally they smoke. I honestly thought they were called this cause of their stupid jet ski's and all, but I guess the joke was on me.
Denis Hopper can't even save this disaster. He acts with some sort of southern accent that he turns on and off through the entire movie. in fact, every single scene he's in made me cringe because of his bad accent, and I usually dig Denis Hopper. If you want good examples of Denis Hopper portraying an awesome villain, see either "Speed" or the first season of "24", much better performances there.
The 90's had some pretty big budget disasters, 98's "Godzilla" comes to mind, but "Waterworld" really takes the cake on the word disaster. Not at all the worst movie I've watched, but not one of the better ones either. Skip it.
