Review of Waterworld (1995) by Jordan W — 16 Apr 2011
Dubbed 'Kevin's Gate' for its uncontrollable budget and shooting schedule the film was described as a flop and failure upon release. Which is not at all true. Although the most expensive film ever made at the time, the film was profitable at the box office and is by no means a bad film either.
The premise could well read 'Mad Max on water' and the film is successful in presenting a post-apocalyptic world (melted polar ice caps in this instance) but it doesn't quite contain the excitement of Mad Max (particularly part 2 which this most resembles). The overlong running time and languid pace could be responsible for this and none of the sequences match those in George Miller's masterpiece.
The film also takes itself a little too seriously, with even Dennis Hopper's 'comedic' performance failing. And Costner, although admirable in the lead does not match Gibson's mystery and charisma.
When a film comes with such a big reputation as this film does, it helps to be in one camp or the other. But the truth is I neither loved or hated the film and without either polar reaction the film seems a little unsatisfying.
