Review of Waterworld (1995) by Allan C — 13 Jun 2012
Part Mad Max, part swashbuckler, all ridiculous. Honestly, this film is not as bad as it's reputation. With a running time at two hours plus, it manages to move at a reasonably fast pace, the action and spectacle are on a large scale and the setting, though not certainly not the story and characters, is reasonably clever and original.
The weakest element of the film is a horribly miscast Coster. I'm not a Costner hater and I think he can be great in the right role (i.e. "Bull Durham" or "Mr. Brooks") but this one is definitely in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" territory.
If you need a post-apocalypse warriors-of-the-wasteland fix that's not Mad Max, try "A Boy and His Dog", "Stake Land", "Cherry 2000" or even "The Postman".
