Ok.... where do I start?

I enjoyed this film. It had good pirate themes and a Kevin Reynolds clearly had a good vision of a post apocalyptic future. The soundtrack was good and I enjoyed the action sequences. However there are many flaws.

The acting in this film was terrible, especially Jeanne Tripplehorn. Kevin Costner and Tina Majorino who were ok, but only because they were given strong characters. The film is dodgy in the sense that it is somewhat complicated, but somewhat simple and can't find a balance between the two. So much of the film was unexplained and could have been further expanded upon.

Let me compare this film to Bloodsport. Bloodsport was a low budget 80's fighting film surrounded by awesome action but crap acting. Since Waterworld was given such a huge budget and went over budget several times, you'd hope that they could afford some good acting, but they couldn't and turned this into quite a misfire.

In the end, the film is worth watching just for the vision of this Waterworld that may exist on our planet someday and the way Kevin Reynolds held on to his vision throughout the film. Although, maybe his vision was influenced by Mad Max 2.
