The biggest mistake was Dennis Hopper and his pseudo-Mad Max gang. If they had gone the serious pathway with the bad guys rather than the dumb humour this movie would be a classic. As it is, it's still enjoyable and holds up well.
The scenes with the Irish pirate are brilliant and deserving of high marks on their own.
