Review of Watership Down (1978) by Patrick E — 02 May 2008
What a terrific film! This is easily one of the best animated works...probably ever.
It is filled with such an honesty, and a level of brutality/realism that is constantly removed from Children's Films. This film is terrifying, it's sad, it's exciting. This is one of the few animated films that actually had me guessing what the outcome was going to be.
I never read the novel it was based on. I will get around to it...probably extremely soon. So, I have a fresh take on the film. I really didn't know what was going to happen.
Seriously, this film has some terrifying imagery, that one would never think would be in a Children's Film. It's a welcomed change of pace from the usual kid's fare.
The scene where the rabbit describes the warren being filled with dirt, and the rabbits dying from suffocation...easily can go down as one of the most horrific images used in an animated film.
This is one of my new favorite films. I recommend it to anyone who is willing to allow themselves to be moved by animation.
