Review of Watership Down (1978) by Jonathan A — 10 Jun 2009
Vivid, pastoral animated adaptation of the novel of the same name following a tribe of rabbits who are constantly on the lam from danger involving humans, dogs, and even other rabbits. Despite it's age, the animation is actually quite beautiful to watch in it's own rough-hewn manner.
Make no mistake though, despite what the poster may depict, this is not a warm, fuzzy family film but a dark, somewhat tragic one that borderlines on nihilism. That being said, the pathos of the film is extremely potent, and all the more supported by an excellent, Vivaldi-esque score.
My biggest criticism has to be with one aspect of the animation and the voice acting; most of the actors they cast sound so alike and the characters were drawn with very subtle differences aside from color that it was often a challenge to tell one apart, but that did not hinder my enjoyment of this wonderful film.
