Review of Watership Down (1978) by Larry C — 30 Aug 2009
It's hard out there for a rabbit, at least if you're a rabbit in this film. It's about a group of rabbits who are warned by one of it's odd, wide-eyed, future-seeing bunnies; that the fields they currently inhabit will run red with blood if they don't escape.
A select few of them escape, and we spend the rest of the film watching these adorable little creatures dodge all kinds of creatures that want to rip them to shreds. This film has an extremely mature script that could pass as some sort of post-apocalyptic survival story if a few things were changed around.
What dosen't work to well for the movie is the overlong transitions between some scenes and the score for the film at points where it seems the composer wanted a lighter feel to the film, when it would have been more effective if they kept a darker score throughout.
Overall, the brutal nature and the metaphor-laced script keep it interesting.
