Review of Watership Down (1978) by Craig C — 03 Mar 2015
The book, which deals with a group of rabbits seeking freedom, got Tolkien comparisons and was on everyone's must read list at the time. I have not read it yet. The producers chose to remain faithful to the book, and not sanitize the evil or bloodshed, and market it to adults.
By staying true to the source, they succeed on the same counts where Bakshi's "Lord of the Rings," released the same year, fails. A courageous milestone in the genre. Essential.
