Review of Watership Down (1978) by Courtland B — 25 Sep 2009
What strikes your mind when you see a bunch of cartoon bunnies, happiness & fantasy and as always adventure.
Well this film is brilliant with its art styling which starts out like an acid trip but it had reason, when it jumps into this closer to realism style of art it takes a very unsettling turn, unsettling but not unwelcome.
The beauty of this film is that its actually something kids could (and I think should) see, because its really cute and fun but at the same time its really realistic and that would teach kids life lessons without scaring them.
Also something that I found amazing was the cast and I dont mean to shut everyone else out...its just that I dont know them too wel, John Hurt is who i'm talking about and he plays Hazel in this film which as strange as this may sound.....his voice really fit that bunnies character.
I suppose the one thing I could say I thought was less than pleases was the ending but I may just not have understood it....but even still, I really enjoyed this movie and I would enjoy watching it again if the chance comes up but i'll leave by saying this, its cute & suspenseful but also turns dark every now and then but that makes it realistic....sometimes I think that Kid movies that are always happy and nothing goes too wrong are kinda dishonest and unfair for kids to see but to an extent this could be considered more adult geared than children geared....But I enjoyed it and you might too.
