Review of Water for Elephants (2011) by Dave C — 29 Dec 2011
Pretty run-of-the-mill romance, but well-acted and interesting. I haven't read the book, but I have a strong suspicion that the book must be superior to the movie, Robert Pattinson not withstanding.
I like him very much in this film. I usually like Reese Witherspoon, but I felt her Marlena could have been played by any other petite actress of middling years; I'm not even sure if Marlena had to be older than Jacob (haven't read it).
One reviewer put it right - the chemistry just wasn't there between them - there was no smolder on the screen. Marlena's decisions seem born of need rather than love, and that's what every audience loves - a romance for the ages driven by self-preservation.
*blech*.
