Hard times in 1931. Very much of its genre, in a gritty 2011 kind of way. August the wicked husband has some depth, being being not wholly wicked despite his murderous ways. The remainder of the characters are pretty one dimensional though.
Outcomes are predictable for this type of fairy tale. We spent an enjoyable and escapist time watching it, but not there's much there as a take away.
