(2011) Water For Elephants.
DRAMA.
Although based on a novel written by Sara Gruen, the film is similar to Tim Burton's movie made in 2003 called "Big Fish" also based on a novel but written by a different author by the name of Daniel Wallace. The premise involves an elderly man played by Hal Holbrook stopping by after a circus closes, he then gets taken in by the owner and it was during this time where the old man start to reflect back his past when he used to work in the circus back in the 1930's. Robert Pattinson as Jacob and Reese Witherspoon as Marlena who are eventually going to be together except that she's already married to a selfish owner named August excellently played by Christopher Waltz.
What I liked about this film what "Big Fish" failed to do is it's unpretentious stance about what circuses was like during "The Great Depression" which much of the performers are treated in the same manner as the animals, and the conditions which they used to endure. The love triangle between the three leads is almost dismissible but the dialogue exchanges particularly with Waltz stands out.
2.5 out of 4.
