Review of Water (2014) by Nikki W — 03 Nov 2007
This film is brilliant. It takes place in North India, when it was still under British Colonialism. The film follows three Hindu women(widows) who dare to stand up for themselves against old traditions that state that a widow (regardless of age) is required by law to leave behind her family and go to live in a restricted area of society within the confounds of an ashram. She is forced to live a life of isolation, alienation, and humiliation as well as survive on a diet consisting mostly of rice without ghee or sweets or anything fried...she is fed once a day.
I actually studied this film in depth for an analysis in film class...I love Deepa Mehta's work...this film is the third in a trilogy of fims directed by Mehta that deals with sensitive, socio-political issues involving women.
