This is an interesting view into Indian culture, with many layers. It shows people clinging to tradition -- even when it robs them of human rights -- while others struggle to create a more modern society.

While parts of the storyline are depressing, it didn't go over the top. And I learned some things about the culture, particularly the treatment of widows who are considered outcasts the rest of their lives.
