Review of Water (2014) by Maya S — 31 Dec 2007
This is a really beautiful film. Critical of India's practices concerning widows, especially child brides, Deepa Mehta went through a lot to make this film, her set was torn down in India by various religious and ethnic groups protesting the subject of the film.
She ended up having to film the movie outside of India as a result. In any case, it is the third and final film in her elemental trilogy which includes Earth and Fire. Like most of her films this one does not shy away from controversial topics and challenges others to consider the inevitable fate of what it means to be a widow in India in the 1930s and beyond.
An amazing performance by an 8 year old girl and some familiar faces from other Deepa Mehta works.
