Review of Water (2014) by Charles C — 02 Feb 2008
Everything about this film is beautiful: the completely fabricated set, the lighting, cinematography, the music, the colors, the actors (specifically Ray and Abraham). The movie is very powerful in a very honest portrayal of a very serious and contested issue in India. Wonderfully, the film is centered around women and does not become a romantic load of BS with the enlightened male gentry saving the poor oppressed oppressed (gorgeous) woman. The young girl was quite incredible , especially because it was her first time acting and not sharing a language with the director.
It does annoy me that the Ray was chosen for the part over others. It seems that in order to sell the film the tragic figure had to be a fair-skinned Canadian model rather than a more humble looking or darker-skinned actor. Is innocence and purity essentially tied to whiteness, beauty, and thinness?
Anyway, I recommend this film on its cinematic achievements and theme.
