Review of Water (2014) by Wendy S — 12 Feb 2008
During the time of the rise of Gandhi, the choices for a woman in India were limited, and tragic. One could not believe that when her husband dies, she becomes a widow, and moves into an ashram to live isolated for the rest of her life.
This is a cultural doctrine that is still practiced today. Deepa Mehta makes a strong statement with this film. Despite it's sad tale, it is beautifully filmed, with a hopeful direction in it despite all the pain.
.. accompanied in parts by some airy, festive music and reveals visually stunning landscapes and colours.
