Review of Water (2014) by Stephanie L — 09 May 2010
I was confused at times by this flick, wondering who the audience was supposed to be. Hindu fundamentalists? Western liberals? It has the burden of political ideology simultaneously weighing it down and bouying it up.
I dunno. I think it was very beautifully shot, but at the same time it drags and really is sorta corny. Perhaps Mehta was trying to subvert the fairytale trope of Bollywood romance where the woman is rescued by a prince.
I admire the intent and effort. If you're English speaking, go for the English version. It isn't simply dubbed - it was shot simultaneously...that way you'll be able to better appreciate the gorgeous cinematography.
