Review of Water (2012) by Craig P — 19 Apr 2008
I am still reeling from this movie. The movie focuses on the plight of Hindu widows in India, but the ending - as the widow watches the train rattle away in the dust and stands alone - shook me to the core with a sense of the world that women live in - where innocent girls are pimped out to sick middle aged men, where widows must live out their lives in a living death, where a woman's choice is often between a living death and suicide.
Though it was a great movie, I do wish a real Indian woman had been cast instead of Lisa Ray. The blue eyes and fair skin were a constant distraction and irritation, as in "Memoirs of a Geisha." WHY? Also, the flute playing and poetry quoting hero was a little much.
