Review of Water (2005) by Priya K — 28 Nov 2007
Excellent cinematography. Subtle references without actual visuals make this movie all the more haunting. Itâ??s almost hypnotic.
The line that moved me the most, 8-yr old Chuyia saying 'I know' when Shakuntala tells her sheâ??s never going home. Heart Breaking.
And a very profound statement aptly capturing of the mindset during that era, "God willing she'll reborn as a man.".
Actually, even today. I can understand this precise feeling, still prevalent amongst millions of Indian women.
Myself included.
And finally the one of the truest lines of the movie, "One less mouth to feed, four less saris, and a free corner in the house. Disguised as religion, it's just about money,".
When technology, lifestyle, and knowledge...everything else we know is evolving, changing, progressing with the good and discarding the out-dated, why can't religion? Why not our mindsets?
Should a text written 5000 yrs ago, dictate how we live today?
One of the best Indian movies Iâ??ve seen in a long long time.
